  Kevin Kenny suggested adding an interp argument to allow reporting of
  error messages in a more standard way.  This has the good side effect
  of removing the subtlety in the change of the interfaces so that
  compilers can detect inconsistencies, making backward-compatability
  #def's feasable.  Which in turn means that this can be done with a
  minor version change, hooray!
